Fråga

Vad ser du mest fram emot som skolchef för Stiftelsen Viktor Rydbergs Skolor?

Svar

My favorite part of working as Director of Schools for the Viktor Rydberg Schools Foundation is working with students and teachers to create the best possible learning environment for each individual. I am inspired by our organization’s values and our mission to be a leader in Swedish education in all aspects. While I am extremely proud of our results, I am always thinking about how could we do this better? And, what do my students need to be ready for their future.

Fråga

Vad kännetecknar en bra lärare?

Svar

Good teachers are the number one tool we have to help our students achieve their fullest potential. For me, a good teacher is well qualified in their subject area, understands the essential pedagogy of combining our shared knowledge of how we learn (brain-based) with the science of motivation (educational psychology), and, most importantly, can create and maintain good relationships with students. Good teachers are curious, dedicated, eager to work together with colleagues and reflect on ”how can we reach every kid” continuously.

Fråga

Vad är det som styr val av undervisningsmetoder och pedagogik på skolan?

Svar

In the VR Schools, we empower our teachers to choose which methodology and pedagogy work best with the students in front of them. We work in teams. We review and reflect continuously. We believe that our teachers’ creativity in developing innovative learning environments is what makes our schools so successful.

Fråga

Vad är lärarnas roll i utvecklings- och förbättringsarbetet inom undervisningen?

Svar

Teachers, together with students, work actively, continuously and systematically to develop both teaching and learning.

Fråga

Vad är Stiftelsen VR:s största utmaningar framöver?

Svar

VR Schools biggest challenges:
Recruiting and maintaining a well-qualified staff of caring teachers
Keeping our learning relevant and responsive to the needs of our students

Fråga

Hur förhåller du dig till den rådande och stegrande lärarbristen?

Svar

VR Schools strives to offer a welcoming working environment where everyone feels accepted and supported. We want to continue to offer our teachers a school where the focus is on teaching and learning, not administrative tasks. We know that together we achieve more so we must organize our time to support that notion.

This alone will not be enough to meet the challenge of ”not enough”. We must also consider creative ways to bring more talented people into our schools. We hope to be an active participant in retooling already educated adults into our teaching profession. By coupling theoretical pedagogical studies with hands-on practice in our schools and leadership training, we believe we can help to ”grow” a new generation of teachers.

Fråga

Vad är bra undervisning, enligt dig?

Svar

Good teaching is real and relevant for the students. They should feel engaged and eager to learn more. They should be challenged but not overloaded. There should be variation and an obvious connection to other areas of learning. Good teaching is based in neuroscience and educational psychology. Good learning is always a result of good teaching in a safe and supportive environment.
